VRLA AGM: planned lifespan 7-10 years

VRLA technology
VRLA is the English abbreviation for Valve Regulated Lead Acid, which means that the battery cells are valve-controlled and gases generated by overcharging or a cell fault can escape through a safety valve. VRLA batteries have excellent leak resistance and can be used in any position. They are completely maintenance-free.

Sealed (VRLA) AGM batteries
AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. In this type of battery, the electrolyte is absorbed by capillary action in a fleece made of fine glass fibers. In our book "Always Electricity" we pointed out that AGM batteries are primarily suitable for short-term high power requirements (engine starting).

Low self-discharge
Victron VRLA batteries can be stored for long periods without recharging due to the use of lead-calcium grids and high-purity materials. The self-discharge rate is less than 2% per month at 20°C. It doubles every time the temperature increases by 10°C. When stored in a cool place, Victron VRLA batteries can be stored for up to a year without recharging.

Excellent performance after deep discharge
Victron VRLA batteries have excellent recovery characteristics even after prolonged deep discharge. However, it must be pointed out that frequent and prolonged deep discharges can also cause irreversible damage to Victron batteries.

Battery discharge behavior
The nominal capacity of Victron batteries refers to a discharge time of 20 hours, i.e. a discharge current of 0.1 C. A lower discharge current increases the effective capacity, and conversely it decreases with a higher discharge current (see table in the data sheet). The AGM series from Victron is characterized by excellent behavior at high discharge currents.
